Groupon - Deal of the Day or Nightmare for Small Business?

Groupon grew out of a deal of the day website in Chicago in 2008, driven by founder Andrew Mason. It now claims to have 33 million registered users world-wide and by 2010 the company was valued at $1.35 billion (Forbes, Nov 23 2010).

However, last month the New York Times reported that Groupon posted a loss of $9.8 million. While Groupon claims revenue is still growing (current figure of around $506.5 million), there seems to be backlash growing against the organisation from the stakeholders that feed it - small business.

ReDigi Touts The Legal Alternative After US Court Victory

ReDigi, the recently launched online music store that allows people to upload, store and resell music via a cloud environment, announced this week that it had successfully defended Capitol Records injunction suit.

In an interesting twist, Google butted into the case stating that if successful the case against ReDigi could pose a threat to the growing cloud computing industry. However, the main focus of the case remained on whether a service that lets users buy and sell previously purchased digital tracks was in fact supporting a “clearing house for copyright infringement”.

Over in the US the "Hotel Finder" ad, listed as a comparison ad, which is separated very slightly from the regular AdWords occupies premium space at the top of Google’s search results and pushes hotel ads and organic listings further down the page.

Facebook Starts Testing Private Messages

Facebook recently confirmed that it is testing private messages for pages. This is aimed primarily at brand pages that want to hold discussions with its fans which may be negative or hold confidential information.

Admins of pages can decide whether or not they want to accept private messages and can only initiate a conversation once a fan has left a post on the pages wall.
